Global Exposure of Big Tech's Profitting from 'Stop the Steal' Narratives

Flora developed a twofold theory of change. The first strategy involved publicly targeting social media companies and exposing their role in disseminating harmful and illegal content. Leading a team of 10+ people resulted in five media-oriented investigations uncovering disinformation, hate speech, and illegal content on Meta, Google, and TikTok.

These reports achieved massive media exposure worth millions of dollars, including an exclusive report in  TIME, and coverage in other publications such as The Hill, AP, Business Insider and Al Jazeera. Meetings with Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) provided  evidence for judicial action against those companies. The United Nations used one of the reports as evidence of unregulated hate speech on social media.

The second strategy was to activate Ekō's 230,000 Brazilian members with high-level informative material debunking the hottest disinformation topics via newsletters and social media content. Additionally, a partnership was created with one of the most reliable groups of fact-checkers in Brazil, AosFatos.

The 2022 Brazilian Presidential elections were expected to be highly contentious on social media platforms. As the primary source of political disinformation and hate speech, it was imperative to take action to prevent the spread – and monetization – of such content.
